ChorusLife:

Smart District Super App

ChorusLife is a smart district in Bergamo integrating commercial spaces, residential areas, events, and services. The client needed a comprehensive app serving three distinct user groups: district visitors, tenants (shop owners, event managers, and residents), and the maintenance team managing the infrastructure.

As users interacted with the district in increasingly diverse ways, feedback revealed the need for a unified platform that could handle complex booking systems, payments, home automation, and digital twin management—all while remaining intuitive and scalable for millions of users.

My Role

As Lead UX/UI Designer, I led the complete design process for ChorusLife over 18 months, working within an Agile/Scrum framework and coordinating with a team of 8 developers. I was responsible for user research, service design, information architecture, UI design, interactive prototyping, and ongoing collaboration throughout development and testing.

Personal Thoughts

This project was a significant challenge—designing for three completely different user types while managing tight timelines and coordinating a development team of 8. What made it rewarding was seeing the app launch successfully with 300,000 downloads and knowing it actually works in the real world. The scalability we built in is already proving valuable, with 2 million users estimated for next year. Leading both the design and development coordination taught me the importance of balancing user needs with technical constraints and business goals.

User Research, Service Design & Strategy

Understanding Three Distinct User Groups

I conducted in-depth research to understand the needs of each user type:

Visitors

  • Discover and explore district amenities (shops, restaurants, arena, events)
  • Book spaces (tables, event seats, parking, spa)
  • Make payments seamlessly through the app
  • Stay informed about district news and events

Tenants

  • Shop and venue owners managing their businesses
  • Event managers coordinating activities
  • Residents of 74 smart apartments with integrated home automation
  • Need complete control of their business/home from one platform

Maintenance Team

  • Monitor district usage and collect data analytics
  • Manage the digital twin infrastructure
  • Oversee the entire smart system

Key Insights

Multi-layered Complexity: Each user group had fundamentally different mental models and workflows that couldn’t be compromised.

Integration Challenge: Systems like bookings, payments, home automation, and digital twin monitoring needed to work seamlessly together.

Scalability Requirement: The solution had to handle growth from thousands to millions of users.

Service Blueprint & Customer Journey

I mapped complete touchpoints for each user type, identifying pain points and opportunities across the entire service ecosystem. This helped prioritize features and define what success looked like for each group.

Information Architecture & UX Design

Multi-User Flow Construction

I designed a flexible information architecture that could serve three different user types without creating confusion. Each user group had tailored navigation and onboarding flows while maintaining a consistent underlying structure.

Wireframing & Validation

I created wireframes for all main flows and conducted iterative review sessions with stakeholders, refining the design based on feedback and technical constraints while maintaining alignment with business objectives.

UI Design & Prototyping

Design System Application

I worked within the existing design system, which followed the brand’s established visual identity, ensuring consistency across all touchpoints while adapting components to meet the specific needs of three different user types.

Flow Design & Prototyping

Starting from initial flow ideation, I iteratively refined user journeys for each user group. I created high-fidelity, interactive prototypes that validated the complete experience before development, documenting every state and interaction to ensure smooth handoff to the development team.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Marketing & Communication

I collaborated with the marketing team to create:

  • Informative brochures for different user types
  • User guides and onboarding materials
  • Stakeholder presentations

Agile Methodology

I worked within an Agile framework using Scrum, facilitating continuous collaboration with the 8-developer team through daily standups, sprint planning, and iterative reviews.

Development Management

I worked daily with the 8-developer team, creating detailed user stories, conducting sprint reviews, and maintaining continuous iteration throughout the build process.

I created detailed user stories, participated in sprint reviews, and maintained ongoing iteration throughout the build process, ensuring design decisions were implemented correctly while remaining flexible to technical constraints.

Real-World Validation

We conducted extensive testing both on-site in the district and with real users from all three groups. Feedback was continuously incorporated through iterative cycles, ensuring the final product met actual user needs.
